Note: IDN domain names are currently in the testbed phase at the registry and name resolution may be
undependable.
IDN domain names are domain names that have been translated from a users native text (Unicode) to Punycode (RFC 3492), an ASCII representation of the native
characters. Registries are now beginning to accept registrations of these Punycode domain names. Here is an example:
Lets say you wanted users who enter in their web browsers to go to your web page.
You could register that domain in its Punycode form which is xn--online-9v7ik91d. So basically xn--online-9v7ik91d is
the domain getting registered with the registry.
The problem with this is that users need a way to first have the native characters translated to Punycode before the
domain will resolve. Web browsers that currently perform the Unicode to Punycode translation are the latest versions of
Mozilla, Opera, and Netscape. For Internet Explorer you will need a third party tool like the i-Nav plug-in provided by Verisign.
You can get more information on IDN domain names at http://www.verisign.com/nds/naming/idn/.
